Facial Services: Aftercare Tips for the First 48 Hours
By IZO Aesthetics & Wellness | August 6, 2026
Serving Charlotte, Huntersville, Concord, Matthews, Mint Hill, and Pineville
One of the things people tell us they love is that we write down step-by-step skincare instructions so you’re not guessing at home. Now for the most important rule: treat the first 48 hours after your facial as a quiet recovery window. Keep it gentle, keep it clean, and don’t add heat, heavy sweat, or strong actives. In Charlotte, that matters even more, because humidity and sun can sneak up fast.
Your first 24 to 48 hours after a facial: the do’s (and the hard no’s)
Right after Facial Services, your skin is usually fresh, a little more open, and more reactive than normal. That’s why our estheticians take time to assess your skin and explain what we’re doing as we go. The aftercare is the same idea: simple steps that protect the work we just did.
48-hour reset: Skip strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, and hot yoga. Heat plus sweat can sting, trigger redness, and invite bacteria into freshly treated pores.
Do this the night of your appointment
- Cleanse gently with a pH-balanced cleanser. No scrubs, no cleansing brushes, no exfoliating pads.
- Moisturize with a lightweight, fragrance-free moisturizer. Your goal is calm, not “active.”
- Hands off. If you had extractions, don’t pick at bumps or flakes. That’s how marks happen.
Avoid these ingredients for 48 to 72 hours (unless we told you otherwise)
We generally recommend holding off on stronger actives like AHAs/BHAs, retinoids, and vitamin C serums for 48 to 72 hours. Your skin usually does better when you let it settle first. If we built you a routine in the room, follow that plan.
Days 3 to 7: how to keep that “glow” without undoing it
People often tell us they leave feeling “refreshed, ” “noticeably smoother, ” and like their skin has been “glowing since.” The first week is where you protect that result. Keep your routine steady and avoid the stuff that tends to trigger irritation.
Sun and sweat are the two biggest glow-stealers in Charlotte
If you’re out in July heat and humidity, your skin can feel fine and still get sensitized. Keep sun exposure minimal and reapply SPF if you’re outside. And if you have to run errands after your appointment near the Prosperity Church Road corridor or the Mallard Creek–Reedy Creek area, keep it simple: sunscreen on, face untouched, and avoid hot, sweaty stops.
If you had extractions or microdermabrasion
A little pinkness can be normal. Flaking can happen too, especially after a stronger exfoliating service like microdermabrasion. The rule stays the same: don’t pick and don’t scrub it off. If you’re unsure what’s normal for your skin, let us know and we’ll talk you through it.
The “keep it calm” product routine we like after facials
After Facial Services, the best routine is the one you’ll actually follow on a busy workday or when you’re heading back to class. Our team keeps it practical and we’ll write it down if you want that step-by-step guidance.
Cleanser
Gentle, pH-balanced, no fragrance. Use lukewarm water and pat dry.
Moisturizer
Lightweight and fragrance-free. If your skin is dry or tight, apply a second thin layer instead of grabbing an active serum.
Sunscreen
Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning. Mineral is often a good choice if you’re feeling sensitive, but the best SPF is the one you’ll reapply.
Quick reminder: Facial masks can be great, but the first couple days isn’t the time for “tingly” or exfoliating masks. Stick to soothing, hydrating options if you use one at all.
When to reach out to our Charlotte team (and when it’s totally normal)
Mild redness right after a facial is common, especially if you had extractions or more exfoliation. Light flaking can also pop up as your skin turns over. What we don’t want you to do is sit at home worried or start throwing random products at it.
“Michelle was extremely knowledgeable and kind. She gave me chemical peel and she took her time to explain the procedure and answered all my questions.”

Reach out if you have intense redness, swelling that’s getting worse, or irritation that doesn’t calm down after a couple days. We’re right here for our Prosperity Church Road corridor and Mallard Creek–Reedy Creek neighbors, and we also support clients coming in from Huntersville, Concord, Matthews, Mint Hill, and Pineville. A quick check-in can save you a week of frustration.

Quick FAQ: facial aftercare questions we hear every week
How long should I wait to exercise after a facial?
We generally recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before strenuous workouts, saunas, steam rooms, or hot yoga. Sweat and heat can trigger irritation and increase the chance of breakouts right after a facial.
Can I wear makeup the same day after a facial?
It’s best to skip makeup the same day, especially if you had extractions. Freshly cleaned pores can clog easily. If you truly need something, keep it minimal and gentle, and avoid heavy, full-coverage products.
When should I apply sunscreen after my facial?
Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ the next morning, and sooner if you’ll be outside in daylight. In Charlotte’s summer sun, reapplication matters if you’re outdoors.
What should I use to cleanse my face after a facial?
Use a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser and lukewarm water. Skip exfoliating cleansers, scrubs, brushes, and anything heavily fragranced for at least a couple days.
Is it normal to have redness or flaking after a facial?
Mild redness right after is common, and some flaking can happen, especially after more exfoliating services. Intense redness, swelling, or irritation that keeps worsening is not something to ignore. Let us know and we’ll guide you.
Are facials the same as facial masks?
Facials are full treatments focused on skin health, like cleansing, exfoliation, extractions as needed, and hydration steps. Facial masks are usually one part of a facial, and we choose them based on what your skin needs that day.
What do you mean by “facial rejuvenation treatment”?
We use that phrase for facials that focus on restoring glow and smoothing texture, especially when you’re seeing dullness or early signs of aging. We’ll match the approach to your skin type and current concerns.
Is a facial massage spa experience still results-focused?
Yes. A facial can feel relaxing and still be very results-driven. We keep the vibe calm, and we also stay focused on your skin goals, like hydration, smoother texture, and a healthier-looking complexion.
