LED Light Therapy Aftercare: Your First 72 Hours Checklist
By IZO Aesthetics & Wellness | September 24, 2026
Serving the Prosperity Church Road corridor and the Mallard Creek–Reedy Creek area in northeast Charlotte.
One thing we’re big on at IZO is sending you home with a step-by-step skincare routine, because results don’t stop at our door. Here’s the #1 rule after LED Light Therapy: keep your skin calm and protected for the next 24 to 72 hours. That means gentle cleansing, hydrating layers, daily SPF, and a short break from strong actives and heavy sweating so your skin can settle and keep improving.
0 to 24 hours: gentle skin, zero heat, and no “testing” new products
LED Light Therapy is non-invasive and painless, so most people feel totally fine right away. But your skin still does best with a calm, simple routine for the first day. We generally recommend you keep it to the basics and skip anything that stings, tingles, or “activates.”
Your same-day 3-step routine: mild cleanse, soothing moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF 30+ (yes, even if you’re mostly indoors).
Do this
- Cleanse with a mild, non-scrubby cleanser and lukewarm water.
- Apply hydration like hyaluronic acid, then seal it in with a fragrance-free moisturizer.
- Reapply SPF if you’re by windows or driving around Charlotte.
Skip this for 24 hours
- Heavy sweating and heat: strenuous exercise, sauna, hot yoga, hot baths, and very hot showers.
- Picking, scrubbing, cleansing brushes, or gritty exfoliants.
- Strong actives like retinoids, strong AHAs/BHAs, and at-home peel pads.
Charlotte summers get hot and humid fast, so we’re extra serious about the “no heat” part. If you want to stay comfortable, plan errands and outdoor time early morning or later evening, especially around the Prosperity Church Road corridor.
24 to 72 hours: keep the glow, avoid retinol and strong acids, and protect from sun
Days two and three are where people accidentally cancel out their results. LED Light Therapy supports skin health using different wavelengths. Blue light targets acne-causing bacteria, red light supports collagen and calms inflammation, and amber light can help with redness and pigmentation. Your part is simple: don’t irritate the skin while it’s in that “happy, receptive” window.
“The esthetician was professional, took the time to assess my skin and explain what they were doing, which I appreciated.”

Keep doing
Gentle cleansing, hydration, and SPF every morning. If your skin feels a little dry, add another layer of moisturizer instead of reaching for exfoliation.
Avoid for 48 to 72 hours
Retinol, prescription retinoids, strong AHA/BHA products, at-home peels, and harsh acne spot treatments unless we’ve told you otherwise.
If you’re commuting, running kids around, or heading to class at UNC Charlotte, keep a travel SPF in the car. Sun exposure is one of the easiest ways to set back progress, even when you “weren’t out that long.”
After 72 hours: how we restart actives without setting off sensitivity
After three days, most people can ease back into their normal routine. If you’re acne-prone or sensitive, go slow. A lot of our regulars come in because they’re tired of guessing and their skin reacts easily, so we like a simple rule: add one “active” back at a time.
- Start with your gentlest active first, every other night, then build up if your skin stays calm.
- If you’re using retinol, reintroduce it slowly and buffer it with moisturizer if you tend to get dry.
- If you’re doing peels or stronger exfoliation, wait until you’re fully back to normal and we’ve cleared the timing for your plan.
And if you’re stacking LED with other services, that’s when aftercare matters even more. LED works beautifully alongside other treatments because it’s gentle, but your skin still needs a calm window to get the most out of it.
Products and habits we like for LED therapy aftercare (simple, not a 12-step routine)
You don’t need a whole new shelf. You need the right few categories, used consistently. We’ll write things down for you if needed, because most people do better with a clear plan than with vibes and guesswork.
The “calm skin” lineup
Mild cleanser, hydrating serum (hyaluronic acid is a great pick), fragrance-free moisturizer, and broad-spectrum SPF 30+.
Habits that protect results
Clean pillowcase, hands off your face, keep workouts light for the first day, and stay consistent with SPF. Charlotte heat plus sweat plus touching your face is a common acne flare combo.
When to call IZO in Charlotte: what’s normal vs what we want to know about
Mild pinkness or a little warmth right after LED can be normal, and it usually settles quickly. What we don’t want you to do is “wait it out” if something feels off.
Reach out the same day if you notice worsening redness, blistering, severe pain, or anything that looks like infection (increasing swelling, heat, pus, or fever).
“Definitely feel a major difference. Friendly staff. Welcoming atmosphere.”

LED Light Therapy aftercare FAQs we get every week
Can I wear makeup after LED Light Therapy?
If you can, go makeup-free for the rest of the day so your skin stays calm and breathable. If you need makeup, keep it light, avoid heavy full-coverage layers, and remove it gently that night with a mild cleanser.
Can I exercise after LED Light Therapy?
We generally recommend skipping strenuous exercise and anything that causes heavy sweating for 24 hours. A gentle walk is usually fine. In Charlotte’s heat, sweaty outdoor workouts right after treatment tend to irritate skin.
How long should I avoid retinol or chemical peels after LED Light Therapy?
Plan on avoiding retinol and strong chemical exfoliants for at least 48 to 72 hours. If your routine includes prescription-strength products or you’re pairing LED with other treatments, let us know and we’ll give you a clear restart plan.
Is mild redness normal after LED Light Therapy and how long does it last?
A little redness or warmth can happen, and it often fades quickly. If redness is persistent, worsening, or comes with pain, swelling, or blistering, reach out so we can guide you.
When should I call the clinic after LED Light Therapy?
Call us if you have worsening redness after the first day, blistering, severe pain, or signs of infection like increasing swelling, heat, pus, or fever. If you’re simply unsure about a product, sunscreen reaction, or timing, call anyway. We’d rather answer a quick question than have you guessing.
